Indian army's General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GoC) Northern Command, Lt. Gen. K T Parnaik Wednesday briefed Governor of Indian- controlled Kashmir N N Vohra on the prevailing situation on line- of-control (LoC), a government spokesman said.
"Lt. General K T Parnaik briefed N N Vohra in detail about yesterday's incident on the LoC at Mankote sector in Mendhar tehsil of Poonch district in which two soldiers were killed and two others injured," the spokesman said.
On Tuesday Indian army officials said a group of Pakistani troopers crossed LoC in Mankote-Mendhar belt of frontier Poonch district, around 185 km southwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir, and killed two Indian troopers besides wounding two others.
Pakistan army however refutes the Indian statement.
Following the incident the two sides exchanged fire in the sector Tuesday evening.
"It is likely that a further meeting in regard to this very important matter shall take place between the Governor and the Army Commander in the next few days," said the spokesman.
On Sunday, Pakistan claimed that Indian army entered into their territory in Haji Pir sector in Uri around 110 km northwest of Srinagar city and attacked their post killing one trooper. The claim however, was rejected by Indian army saying only an exchange took place between the two sides.
Indian army has sounded an alert on LoC dividing Kashmir into Indian and Pakistani controlled parts, following Tuesday's skirmish.
New Delhi and Islamabad in 2003 agreed to observe a ceasefire along the International Border and LoC in Kashmir. Though some violations have been reported on both sides, the ceasefire remains in effect.
Defense officials say intrusion of India and Pakistan troopers into each other's territory was unheard of since 2003.
Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan is claimed by both in full. Since their Independence from British, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
