Security beefed up ahead of last phase of voting in Indian-controlled Kashmir

Authorities in Indian-controlled Kashmir Tuesday beefed up security apparatus across Baramulla constituency ahead of last phase of voting for India's general elections in the restive region, officials said.

The steps were taken to ensure incident free polling in the constituency, north of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian- controlled Kashmir.

The voting in the constituency is scheduled to take place Wednesday.

"Elaborate arrangements have been made for smooth, free and fair polls in the constituency," a government spokesman said. " Today polling material and staff was dispatched to their destinations from distribution centers."

The polling booths and staff have been provided adequate security to prevent them from militant attacks, officials said.

According to officials 1616 polling stations have been set up across the constituency spread over three districts - Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora.

Reports said over 200 people have been detained ahead of elections in the constituency to ensure incident free elections on Wednesday.

The authorities have deployed contingents of police and paramilitary to thwart militant attempts to disrupt elections.

Earlier during the day a bomb rocked a school in Sopore. Reports said the schools was supposed to be used as a polling booth for voting.

The Indian policemen were seen frisking pedestrians and checking vehicles at various towns in Baramulla constituency.

The polling in Anantnag and Srinagar constituency was marred by boycott, protests and violence.Officials said Ladakh constituency is also scheduled to go for polls on Wednesday.Indian-controlled Kashmir elects six members for the 543-member lower house of Indian parliament known as Lok Sabha.
