An argument between two family members at a school in Nazare, central Portugal, on Monday resulted in a man being shot dead, local media reported.

A dispute between two men, aged 40 and 67, led to several shots being fired. It is understood that the men involved were, respectively, the father and grandfather of a pupil, and that the confrontation related to the father's lack of legal access to the child.

The older man was taken to the Santo Andre Hospital in Leiria, some 150 km north of Lisbon, suffering from bullet and stab wounds, but died from his injuries.

The younger man was detained by members of the school's security staff and handed over to police.

The incident occurred in the school yard of the Amadeu Gaudencio school in Nazare, a coastal town 120 km north of Lisbon.

Several children witnessed the attack and are being given psychological counseling.

The school immediately closed for the day, and will reopen Tuesday.

Shootings at schools in Portugal are extremely rare.
