The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Christine Lagarde named Changyong Rhee, the chief economist of the Asian Development Bank, as director of the organization's Asia and Pacific Department, the IMF said Tuesday.

Rhee will replace Anoop Singh, who announced his intention to retire in July. The appointment will become effective Feb. 10, 2014.

"Mr. Rhee brings together a wealth of public and private sector experience as well as a deep understanding of financial markets," said Lagarde in a statement. "As Asia continues to be one of the most dynamic regions in the global economy, my management team and I look forward to working with Mr. Rhee in serving our member countries in the region."

Rhee, a national of the Republic of Korea (ROK) who received his Ph.D in economics from Harvard University, has been the chief economist of the Asian Development Bank since March 2011. Prior to that, he held a range of senior public policy positions in ROK.
