Hundreds of flights to and from Germany cancelled as security workers strike

Hundreds of flights to and from Germany were cancelled on Monday as security workers staged a strike amid wage disputes.

Security workers staged a full-day strike at six airports including Duesseldorf, Cologne/Bonn and Berlin on Monday.

According to Reuters, other one-day strikes have been called for more airports on Tuesday including Frankfurt and Hamburg.

The strike comes as airlines are reeling from the impacts of the military operation in Ukraine, which has lasted 19 days now.

The Russian military operation has resulted in fuel prices and airspace closures, which come as countries were continuing their emergence from a two-year disruption in travel demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

About 160 of the cancelled flights were at Duesseldorf airport, accounting for more than half of the planned 290 departures and arrivals.

At Cologne/Bonn, 94 out of 136 flights were called off, and Berlin airport's website also showed many cancelled flights.

Tuesday's strike will hit Germany's busiest airport, Frankfurt, which handled around 2.1 million passengers last month.

Some foreign missions warned their citizens who were planning to travel to Germany to be on the lookout for any delays and cancellations due to the strikes.

Nigeria's embassy in Berlin advised the country's citizens to confirm their flight status before setting out to the affected airports.
