NEW DELHI, Nov. 28 (APD) -

Earlier this week the South Delhi Municipal Corporation inaugurated the first children only toilet in a slum in Delhi.

The decision to construct the toilet was made to discourage defecation in the open, especially among the slum dwellers.

Last year, the government identified 259 spots in Delhi where open defecation was taking place. Now they are trying to check open defecation at the spots.

According to reports, the children-only toilet has small pots, washbasins, urinals, taps and changing areas that can be used by children aged between 2 and 12 years.

Speaking to the media, the deputy commissioner of South Delhi Municipal Corporation said, “The complex has seven cubicles for girls and six for boys. It is a pilot project to address the problem of open defecation. If the project is successful, we will replicate it in other slums.”

Speaking about the children-only toilet, a government official informed that to make the toilet attractive to the kids, it has rainbow colour tiles, cartoon figures, alphabets and numerical numbers on the walls. He also informed that guards have been deployed at the gate to guard the toilet.

The recent development comes a month after the inauguration of the first ‘Pink Toilet’, which are toilets only for women. The toilets have special sanitary napkin vending machines and other facilities exclusively for women.
