The United Nations Security Council has been holding an emergency open meeting on the conflict between Israel and Palestine in Gaza. The meeting was chaired by China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi via video link, as China holds the presidency of the Security Council this month. Addressing the meeting, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an immediate end to the fighting between Palestinians and Israelis. Guterres said he is appalled by the increasingly large number of Palestinian civilian casualties, including many women and children, from Israeli strikes in Gaza. He also decried Israeli fatalities from rockets launched from Gaza. On his part Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi gave a four point appeal, calling for an immediate ceasefire and end to violence, humanitarian assistance for the victims, international cooperation to end the violence, and the two-state solution to the Palestinian question.
