UNHCR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi said Monday a total of 50,000 Syrian refugees in Jordan will leave the country and head to other countries.

Speaking at a press conference in Amman Monday, he said more than 24,000 Syrian refugees in Jordan have already been resettled in the U.S. and some European countries.

He also voiced appreciation of Jordan's efforts in hosting refugees, adding that Jordan is the 6th largest host country of refugees in the world.

On the issue of the Syrians stranded at the no man's land between Jordan and Syria, he said the UNHCR discussed with Jordan the creation of a clinic for treating sick Syrians among those and that the UNHCR is awaiting Jordan's approval in this regard.

According to official figures, there are some 1.4 million Syrian refugees in Jordan.

He said the UNHCR understands Jordan's security concerns.

He added that the UNHCR expects more waves of Syrian refugees as the violence is still ongoing in the country, adding that there are some five million Syrians registered as refugees with the UNHCR in several countries.

The UN official called on the international community to boost aid to countries hosting Syrian refugees.

Also Monday, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Imad Fakhoury met with Grandi and discussed the impact of Syrian refugees on Jordan.
