Iran's FM urges removal of U.S. sanctions amid COVID-19 outbreak

Iranian foreign minister called for removal of U.S. sanctions against the Islamic republic as the country is fighting the novel coronavirus, official IRNA news agency reported Thursday.

Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote a letter to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and called for removing all the unilateral U.S. sanctions to help Iran fight coronavirus, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi was quoted as saying by IRNA.

In his letter, a copy of which was sent to all international organizations' chiefs and foreign ministers of all countries, Zarif stressed the need for lifting all U.S. "illegal" and unilateral sanctions so that Iran would be able to combat the virus, said Mousavi.

Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education on Thursday announced that 10,075 people were infected with COVID-19 across the country, of whom 429 died.
