New Delhi, August 28(APD) -- Responding to a plea to visit Kashmir, the Supreme Court of India on Wednesday said, "If a citizen wants to visit a part of the country, he must have access to."

The supreme court panel headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi was replying to CPI(M) party’s general secretary Sitaram Yechury’s request to visit Jammu and Kashmir.

The court allowed Yechury to visit Kashmir, however it instructed the leader that the purpose should be limited to enquire about his colleague Tarigami’s health and not to pursue any political motives.

Supreme Court further directed that his travel and visit should be facilitated and the authorities should report back to the court in case the visit is used by Yechury to seek any political agendas.

After the court order, Yechury tweeted, “The Supreme Court has permitted me to go to Srinagar and see Com Yousuf Tarigami and ‘report’ back to them on the condition of his health. Once I meet him, return and report to the Court, I will make a more detailed statement.”

Besides Yechury, the court also allowed a student studying in Jamia Millia University in Delhi to visit his family in Kashmir.

A curfew and security restrictions were imposed in Jammu and Kashmir after August 5, when the government revoked the former state’s special status and bifurcated it into two different union territories — Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
