The United Nations has tripled the size of its humanitarian aid appeal to fight the coronavirus.

The COVID-19 Global Humanitarian Response Plan was launchedin March, but the UN has now expanded the project.

It says it now needs $6.7 billion dollars to help the world's most vulnerable countries.

CGTN spoke to Mark Lowcock, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs about the use of additional funds and the challenges that less-developed countries face amid COVID-19.

Mark said: "What's happened is as the virus has spread to lots of other countries, they have been affected in many cases hugely and need external help. Better off countries largely can cope with their own problems, but more problems need help now."

He also said, "We thought the beginning of this year before there'd be about 130 million people on the planet who would need assistance with food simply to survive. Now, because of the economic catastrophe COVID-19 has brought with it, that number is now doubled."
