At least 80 people were killed and 350 wounded in Kabul on Wednesday when a powerful vehicle-borne bomb exploded in the middle of the Afghan capital, a public health official said.

The attack is one of the most serious seen in the Afghan capital for several months.

The explosion occurred in an area close to German embassy in Kabul's diplomatic area, according to Reuters. But the precise target of the attack was not clear as the area is a hub for other embassies and government offices.

It also remains unclear whether German embassy staff were injured by the blast.

The explosion shattered windows and blew doors off nearby houses. Xinhua New Agency said more than 50 vehicles were destroyed and dozens of the buildings around the site were damaged by the blast. Police in the area are on high alert.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
