This raucous China-smearing campaign has reflected some U.S. political elites' deep-rooted ideological bias against China.

One major reason for those Washington politicians to seize every possible chance to smear China is not because China is doing it wrong, but because China is doing it right in its own way.

Many across the United States and around the world remain sober and open-minded, and have offered their help to China as the epidemic rages on.

BEIJING, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- The ongoing fight against the COVID-19 remains arduous. A final global victory hinges on how well members of the international community can work together.

At this drastic moment, some Washington politicians like U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and White House trade advisor Peter Navarro seem to be sowing divisions, tapping into the public's fear of this unknown disease, and churning out lies about China.

Those lies are as sensational as they are inconceivable. Some have accused China of lacking transparency in combating the epidemic; some absurdly hinted that the new coronavirus is "a man-made bioweapon"; others smeared China as a "disease incubator."

The Pompeos and the Navarros are turning a blind eye to China's rigorous and effective measures against the epidemic as well as its timely and transparent data-sharing efforts, which have won broad recognition for buying the world a precious window of opportunity to prepare and respond.

This raucous China-smearing campaign has reflected some U.S. political elites' deep-rooted ideological bias against China.

In their eyes, a rising China constitutes a formidable challenge to the United States and to a solar system in which they believe that Washington is the Sun, and everyone else should orbit around it.

One major reason for those Washington politicians to seize every possible chance to smear China is not because China is doing it wrong, but because China is doing it right in its own way.

Those China-bashers' mindset is not only obsolete, but will also hurt their own country's vital interests in this world of increasing interdependence and interconnectedness.

Take the current fight against the COVID-19 as an example. Right now, 46 countries outside China have reported cases of infection, and the number seems to be still growing. The only way to get this dire situation under control is for all countries across the globe to fight shoulder to shoulder. The human race is in this together.

For those China fear-mongers in Washington, lying may fool some minds in the short run and get the liars some cheap and transient political gains. Yet in the long run, lying would only reveal their true colors of bigotry and bias, and compromise America's credibility.

Fortunately, many across the United States and around the world remain sober and open-minded, and have offered their help to China as the epidemic rages on.

The U.S. Jewish community in an open letter released earlier this week also cautioned against xenophobia following the novel coronavirus outbreak, saying that history has shown that fearmongering can be devastating.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, also stressed that "This is a time for global solidarity -- political solidarity, technical solidarity and financial solidarity."

China-bashing opportunists should listen to those rational voices, and let reason, not false pride or prejudice, prevail in Washington. ■
