A TV show adapted from a classic novel has been modified in response to public criticism regarding the accuracy of the adaptation.

An abridged version of the drama "Wu Song" premiered Wednesday night on the Shandong satellite TV station.

In the unabridged version, Wu Song and his neighbor Pan Jinlian are affectionate towards each other. Pan, however, ends up marrying Wu's older brother, as she believes that Wu died during while escaping from a prison.

But in the classic novel "Outlaws of the March", Wu resists Pan's affections, and later even kills Pan and her adulterer Xi Menqing after learning that they poisoned his brother to death.

The adaptation spurred widespread controversy after viewers realized that Wu's image had been dramatically changed.

However, the adaptation also has some supporters.

"The images of Wu Song and Pan Jinlian are from a literary work, rather than from history books," said writer Yu Hua. "Being able to adapt a literary work is a creative right."
