Indian Navy submarine mishap caused due to glitches in cables

The submarine mishap last week off Mumbai coast, which led to the resignation of then Indian Navy chief D.K. Joshi, was the result of a fire caused by glitches in the cables of the vessel, defense sources said Monday.

"A preliminary probe has revealed that the smoke on board INS Sindhuratna was triggered by a fire which was caused due to problems in the cables of the submarine, and not the battery compartment as was earlier feared," the sources said.

The final probe report will take some more time to come out, they added.

The mishap of the Russian-origin kilo-class submarine last Wednesday had claimed the lives of two naval officers and injured seven sailors who tried to douse the fire.

Last August, another Russian-origin submarine INS Sindhurakshak sank at Mumbai port, following a major fire on board, triggered by multiple explosions, claiming the lives of 18 sailors.
