Two unions called the strike to urge the government to nationalize the company, which was put into administration earlier this month after years of losses.

The government has already ruled out this option and is looking for a buyer, while unions are negotiating on working conditions during the administration period.

Alitalia said 80 percent of passengers affected by the strike were reassigned to other flights.
