Mathematics taught in schools is not relevant in the workplace, Australia's chief scientist said on Tuesday.

Professor Ian Chubb said Australian schools needed to teach maths, which could be applied in real-life jobs.

"As the global economy becomes increasingly dependent on technology, our national competitiveness will be underwritten by our real-world capability in mathematics and science," he told the Channel 9 TV.

His criticism follows the release of a study by the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers and the Australian Industry Group, which looked at how maths was applied in various industries.

The report recommended that a national curriculum be developed to help schools teach maths skills that were more relevant in the workplace.
