No major accidents, natural disasters reported on 1st day of May Day holiday

China reported no major accidents and natural disasters as of 7 p.m. Friday, the first day of the five-day May Day holiday, in a situation described as "overall stable" by the Ministry of Emergency Management.

The results came after intensified efforts by nationwide firefighting and rescue teams to curb fire risks.

On Friday, nationwide firefighting and rescue teams sent 3,560 fire trucks and 18,000 firefighters in more than 1,600 fire extinguishing and emergency tasks.

A total of 180 people were rescued and 400 people were evacuated during the day, the ministry said.
