Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA) president Enock Dongo hailed China for providing medical assistances to Zimbabwe in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
He told Xinhua recently that the assistance, including the revamping of the country's main isolation and treatment center, and medical equipment and supplies, had improved the capacity and working environment for medical personnel to respond to the pandemic.
Chinese business enterprises, working under the guidance and coordination of the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe, mobilized funds and upgraded Wilkins Hospital in Harare which has been designated as the country's main isolation and treatment facility.
Wilkins Hospital is under the management of Harare City Council. The council's health director Prosper Chonzi told Xinhua that the ergonomics of Wilkins Hospital had vastly improved following the renovation by the Chinese, which also included repainting and habilitation of ablution facilities and the plumbing system.
He said the rehabilitation work had expanded the capacity of the hospital to install new equipment, which is now currently being installed.
"We have been working with the Chinese to spruce up infrastructure at Wilkins Hospital to make it suitable for other services like high care and critical care."
"So at the moment the building has been sorted out even in terms of the general outlook. But what I think is most important is that we are now able to fully equipped the hospital with machinery that can manage critically ill patients," Chonzi said.
He said the hospital's intensive care capacity had been improved, and that they can now put critical equipment such as ventilators, monitors and vacuum extractors.
Chonzi said the hospital environment had not only improved for health personnel but for patients as well.
