Chinese mainland reports 18 new COVID-19 cases

The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BEIJING -- Chinese health authority said Monday that it received reports of 18 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Sunday, of whom 11 were domestically transmitted and seven were imported.

Of the domestically transmitted cases, nine cases were reported in Beijing and two in neighboring Hebei Province, the National Health Commission said in its daily report.

LIMA -- Peru's COVID-19 death toll surpassed 8,000 on Sunday as the total number of people infected with the novel coronavirus reached 254,936.

The Health Ministry said in its daily report that COVID-19 has caused 8,045 deaths in the country.

In the past 24 hours, 3,598 new cases of infection and 184 more deaths from the disease were registered, the ministry added.

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market fell in early trade on Monday, as concerns over rising numbers of COVID-19 infections rattled investor sentiment.

In the Australian state of Victoria, officials postponed an easing of lockdown restrictions after a jump in infections over the weekend.

"The potential economic damage of a new round of COVID-19 countermeasures will likely contain any investor enthusiasm," CMC Markets Chief Market Strategist Michael McCarthy said.

LOS ANGELES -- The number of COVID-19 cases has totaled 173,324 in the U.S. state of California as it recorded its highest single-day spike in coronavirus infections on Sunday.

According to the data from the California Department of Public Health, 4,515 new virus diagnoses were identified statewide in the previous 24 hours, beating the previous record of 4,317 new cases reported Friday.

SANTIAGO -- Chile has reported a total of 242,355 COVID-19 cases as of Sunday, with 4,479 deaths, according to the country's health ministry.

In the past 24 hours ending 9 p.m. local time Saturday, 5,607 new cases were detected and 184 more patients died, the ministry said.

CAIRO -- Egypt confirmed on Sunday 1,475 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total cases registered in the country since mid-February to 55,233, said Egyptian Health Ministry.

Meanwhile, 87 patients died from the novel coronavirus on the same day, raising the death toll to 2,193, Egyptian Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said in a statement.
