Police have detained a man who allegedly killed six people in east China's Shanghai Municipality on Saturday, local police said Sunday.

The 62-year-old suspect, a man surnamed Fan, beat one of his colleagues to death and subsequently killed five others, including three of his colleagues, a driver and a sentry on Saturday, municipal police said.

Four others -- a sentry, a police officer and two of Fan's colleagues -- were injured. They are receiving medical treatment and are in stable condition, local police said.

Fan, who is director of the general office of Shanghai Guangyu Fine Chemical Co., Ltd., had a dispute over a factory equipment transfer with two colleagues surnamed Li and Zhang, respectively, on Saturday.

Fan beat Zhang to death during their fight. As he fled, he gunned down a driver and drove the man's car back to the plant. On his way back, he killed a sentry at a military barracks and injured another with a hunting rifle.

He shot three others dead and injured two at the gate of the plant when he returned at 11 p.m. Saturday.

Police captured Fan at 11:15 p.m. at the plant. A police officer was shot and injured during the process.

Shanghai Party chief Han Zheng and Mayor Yang Xiong ordered relevant authorities to handle the aftermath properly, make a thorough investigation of the case, release related information in a timely manner, and maintain social stability.

Following the case, the Ministry of Public Security on Sunday ordered police authorities across the nation to step up security on the streets and make resolute efforts to stop violent crime.

Meng Jianzhu, head of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, and Guo Shengkun, Minister of Public Security, ordered on Sunday to quickly investigate and find out the truth of the deadly case and make all-out efforts to save the injured people.

The two senior officials also urged enhanced efforts to resolve social disputes and crack down on violent crimes that severely endanger public security.

Also on Sunday, the Public Security Ministry held an emergent teleconference, ordering hard strike on gun and explosive-related crimes, and check and confiscate illegally-possessed guns and explosives.

Police officers are also asked to visit local residents and work together with relevant authorties to prevent and reduce social disputes at the source.

Violent criminals who endanger public security will be dealt with harshly in accordance with law, according to the minsitry.
