The driver of a coach which crashed in the region of Murcia, in southeast Spain, killing 14 people and injuring over 40 late on Saturday night is to be charged with homicide, causing injury and with dangerous driving, confirmed the delegate of the Murcia regional government on Sunday.

The accident, which happened just outside the town of Cieza at around 23:30 (2230 GMT) on Saturday night, is the third worst road accident in Spain since the year 2000.

The government delegate, Joaquin Bascunana, said it was probably caused by excess speed.

Those on board were all from the small village of Bullas and were returning from attending a religious event in Madrid and on Sunday evening 28 were still receiving treatment in various hospitals in the region.

The driver, who is among the injured and also being treated for a rapid heartbeat in hospital, tested negative for drugs and alcohol, is reported to have told the police that the brakes failed, before the coach left the road and rolled down a 15-meter slope.

The owners of the coach J Ruiz confirmed the vehicle was "9 or 10 years old," and "in perfect condition," having passed a safety check 48 hours previously.

Meanwhile the government of Murcia has decreed three days of mourning in the region. The presence of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain has also been confirmed for the funeral, which will be held on Monday. Enditem
