Asian shuttlers shine at World Superseries Finals

Akane Yamaguchi of Japan edged out India’s PV Sindhu at the Dubai World Superseries Finals women's singles on Sunday.

The top-seeded Japanese beat Sindhu 15-21, 21-12, 21-19 in a match that lasted over an hour and 30 minutes.

"During the entire match I saw the trophy placed on the side of the court and I thought 'I want this trophy, I want this,” she said.

The Chinese pair - the mixed doubles world number one team of Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen - won the final of the event. They won the title with a straight set victory of 21-15, 22-20 against Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet from Hong Kong, China.

Hong Kong's Tang and Tse, who rank tenth in the mixed doubles and are the 2017 Danisa Denmark Open champions, had the chance to turn the match in the second set when they reached a 20-20 draw. But Zheng and Chen held their nerves and snatched the win with a fast and well-coordinated power play.

Indonesian shuttlers Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo beat Chinese pair Liu Cheng and Zhang Nan in the men’s doubles final. This is their first world-level title.

Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota lost to their compatriots during the women’s doubles final. The match between the two Japanese pairs lasted 57 minutes.
