Kashmiri rights activist held for inciting violence

Human rightsactivist Khurram Parvez was detained on Thursday night for allegedly inciting violence among youth in Kashmir, a day after he was prevented by immigration officials in New Delhi from boarding a plane toGenevato attend aUnited Nationshuman rights conference.

A police officer, who did not want to be named, told TOI on Friday that Khurram had been taken into "preventive detention" atKothi Baghpolice station to maintain peace and public order.

The officer said Khurram had been "actively instigating Kashmiri youth against the government and police on social media".

Around 150 people were injured in clashes across Kashmir on Friday . More than 80 people have been killed and thousands injured sinceHizbulcommander Burhan Wani's death on July 8.

Khurram, who works with the Srinagar-based human rights group Jammu & Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS), is known for his separatist views and his singular focus on "violations committed by the Indian state in Kashmir". He lost one of his legs in a militantplanted landmine blast in north Kashmir during the 2002 assembly polls.

Police said though Khurram was denied permission to travel on Wednesday night, JKCCS chief Parvez Imroz and another human rights activistKartik Murukutlahad been allowed to go to Geneva to attend the UNHRC session.
