Live COVID-19 updates: 46 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Beijing

The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BEIJING -- A total of 46 people have tested positive in throat swab COVID-19 tests in Beijing, after authorities conducted city-wide nucleic acid tests in wholesale markets of farm produce and large-scale supermarkets on Friday, authorities said Saturday.

Disease prevention and control staff conducted nucleic acid tests on 1,940 people in the markets. Of the 517 samples collected from Xinfadi, Beijing's major wholesale market, 45 were found positive in throat swab tests, Pang Xinghuo, deputy head of the municipal disease control and prevention center, said at a press conference on Saturday.

NEW DELHI -- COVID-19 cases crossed the 300,000-mark in India on Saturday, reaching 308,993, as the death toll stood at 8,884, said the latest data issued by the federal health ministry.

The ministry said that 386 new deaths due to COVID-19, besides fresh 11,458 positive cases were reported during the past 24 hours across the country, taking the number of deaths to 8,884 and total cases to 308,993.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 49 more cases of the COVID-19 compared to 24 hours ago as of 0:00 a.m. Saturday local time, raising the total number of infections to 12,051.

The daily caseload moved between 30 and 60 for the past 13 days. Of the new cases, five were imported from overseas, lifting the combined figure to 1,330.

BEIJING -- Chinese health authority said Saturday that it received reports of 11 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Friday, of which six were domestically transmitted and five were imported.

All of the domestically transmitted cases were reported in Beijing, the National Health Commission said in its daily report.

YANGON -- Myanmar government announced late Friday further extension of effective period for preventive measures against COVID-19 until the end of June.

The national-level Central Committee on Prevention, Control and Treatment on COVID-19 issued the announcement of extension measures as part of efforts to contain the spread of the disease.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil has overtaken Britain to be the country with the second-highest death toll of COVID-19 in the world, according to data from the Brazilian Health Ministry.

The ministry on late Friday confirmed 909 new deaths over the last 24 hours, taking the country's total deaths to 41,828, while the death toll in Britian is 41,566.
