Marco Polo (1254-1324), is a famous Italian Venetian merchant and explorer. The release of “Travels of Macro Polo" has greatly enriched the geographical knowledge of Europeans, spread the "desirable Chinese civilization" to Europe, and turn a new page for Sino-Western exchanges.

Marco Polo once came to China with his father and uncle through the Silk Road as an official of the Yuan Dynasty. Marco Polo has lived in China for 17 years and has traveled across 57 cities in China, such as Beijing, Hangzhou, and Yangzhou, etc.

These cities are recorded in detail in the book "Travels of Marco Polo", which describes the civilization and prosperity of Chinese cities, mostly related to the Grand Canal. In history, the Grand Canal of China is an important channel for world trade, transportation and cultural exchanges, and it has left an indelible mark on the history of human society.

In late November 2020, the People’s Government of Yangzhou City held the "Sino-German Business Cooperation and Yangzhou Food Appreciation Conference" in Shanghai. Dr. Christine D. Althauser, Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai, specifically mentioned in her speech that Marco Polo is a friendly envoy of cultural exchanges between the East and the West. Europe learned about ancient Chinese civilization from Marco’s travelogue, which aroused European people's yearning for the mysterious Orient. Yangzhou has the only Marco Polo Memorial Hall in China, which attracts many western tourists to visit every year.
