Iran's COVID-19 deaths surpass 6,000: health ministry

Iran's death toll from the novel coronavirus pandemic surpassed 6,000, the spokesman for the health ministry announced on Thursday. The official figures released by the ministry showed 71 more people died from the virus overnight, pushing the total to 6,028.

Kianush Jahanpur, head of Public Relations and Information Center of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, shared daily figures showing 983 new confirmed cases, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 94,640.

According to the data, the number of recovered patients are 75,103, which amounts to about 79 percent of the confirmed cases, while 2,976 people are still in critical condition.

The number of administered lab tests across the country are 463,295 so far, said Jahanpur.

Iran announced its first cases of COVID-19 on Feb. 19.
