The 20 hostages killed during a 10-hour siege on a cafe in the Bangladesh capital travelled there from opposite sides of the globe.

Nine Italians, seven Japanese, an Indian and two students attending a US university were among those killed when militants stormed Holey Artisan Bakery, a popular cafe with foreigns in the diplomatic zone in Dhaka.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, which also killed two police officers. Many details of the attack remain unclear a day after commandos stormed the restaurant and rescued 13 people.

Security officials were searching yesterday for clues and criminal masterminds who might have set in motion the bloody hostage crisis that left 28 dead, including six attackers.

In Atlanta, Emory University confirmed Abinta Kabir, a United States citizen from Miami, Florida, who was visiting friends and family in the area, and Faraaz Hossain were among the dead.

Kabir was entering Emory’s Oxford College as a second-year student. She was visiting family and friends in Bangladesh at the time of the attack. Hossain was a graduate of Oxford College and a student at the university’s Goizueta Business School in Atlanta.

Fellow student Kereisha Harrell, 20, said on Saturday she worked with Hossain and Kabir on Emory’s Oxford College Student Activities Committee executive board, which planned school-wide events.

“They were always so willing to help,” said Harrell. “They put everyone before themselves. They were both very intelligent. They never had any enemies. Anyone who met them fell in love with them. They were genuinely great people. It’s a serious loss for Emory and Oxford as a whole.”

One of the Italian victims was Cristian Rossi, a 47-year-old clothing business manager and father of twin girls from northeastern Italy.

Another victim, Simon Monti, 33, from Italy’s Rieti area was said to be five-months pregnant with a boy she planned to name Michelangelo.

Out of eight Japanese nationals eating at the restaurant, seven were killed, according to the Japanese government. They were consultants working on a Japanese government aid project. Brigadier General Nayeem Ashfaq Chowdhury, director of military operations, said the victims were killed execution-style by a sharp weapon long before the launch of a rescue operation, according to the Dhaka Tribune.

According to the sources, three of the victims were Makoto Okamura, Yuko Sakai and Rui Shimodaira – all employees of Tokyo-based construction consulting company Almec.

The president of Almec said that the three employees killed in the attack, who worked in urban planning, were “young, promising and filled with a sense of mission, and believed their work was helping people”.

“I really prayed for a miracle to happen. I wish I could have changed places with them,” said Katsuhide Nagayama.
