JAKARTA, July 2 (APD) — Indonesia’s Central Java province city of Surakarta commenced on Tuesday the qualifying round of 2019 Asian Juniors & Girls U-20 Championship, participated by 69 young chess players from several Asian countries and regions, the tournament organizer said.
The prestigious Asian chess tournament would contend three chess groups of standard, rapid and blitz. Eight stages of qualifying rounds have been set for players vying in the tournament slated to end on July 9.
The host country sent 37 from overall chess players taking part in the annual tournament, the tournament chief organizer Dwi Hatmisari said.
“We hope our chess players prevail in this competition, seizing the champion title and earning an international master (IM) title,” she said in the event held in the city’s lavish hotel.
Indonesian players were also expected to hone their chess playing skills through the experiences they obtained during the matches with their experienced rivals, she added.
The tournament was also expected to spur Indonesia’s chance to host more international chess events sanctioned by World Chess Federation of FIDE and Asian Chess Federation in the future, she said.
Besides Indonesia, the nations and regions sent their players in the tournament were Malaysia, India, Iraq, Iran, Vietnam, the Philippines, Kazakstan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, New Zealand and China’s Hong Kong.
The organizer claimed the current tournament has more participating countries and regions compared to it was in the previous years held in India in 2016, Iran in 2017 and Mongolia in 2018.
