The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday that it has imposed sanctions on six U.S. individuals and an entity in response to a recent "business alert."

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry said China strongly opposes and condemns the so-called business alert issued by the U.S., adding it was intended to smear the business environment in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). The spokesman also said the U.S. had illegally sanctioned several Chinese Central Government officials in the HKSAR.

Hong Kong is part of China and its affairs are purely China's domestic affairs, the spokesperson said, adding that external forces that attempt to meddle in the Hong Kong affairs will find themselves in a situation like tiny ants that try to shake the mighty tree.
