The 2018 Winter Olympic torch relay got into the holiday spirit with a stop at the Bonghwa Santa Village near the northernmost point of South Korea on Christmas Day.

The Pyeongchang flame was then taken on a 27.7-kilometer (17.2-mile) train journey through the former mining region.

The Bonghwa area has reinvented itself as a tourist destination since the decline of the mining industry, with its Santa Village a centerpiece. To mark the holiday, the relay runners were escorted by red-clad "Santas" throughout the day.

The Olympic torch relay, which began its journey in Incheon on November 1, is traveling along a route measuring exactly 2,018 kilometers through nine provinces and eight major cities across South Korea.

The torch will reach its final destination on February 9 when it will light the cauldron at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang.

There are no less than 7,500 torchbearers taking part in transporting the Olympic flame across the country.
