The jewels snatched by an armed robber from a jewelry exhibition in the southeastern French city of Cannes could be worth more than 130 million U.S. dollars, local media reported on Monday.

Citing its own sources, the regional weekly Nice Matin said, "The armed robbery at the Carlton Hotel on Sunday is definitely spectacular even in the amount of loot."

The robbery took place around 11:30 a.m. local time (0930 GMT). A masked man left the exhibition with several bags containing jewelry and watches encrusted with diamonds.

An investigation is under way to arrest the robber.
