A policeman was shot dead in a car by unidentified militants in Eastern Cairo late Sunday, state-run newspaper Al-Ahram website reported.

The police officer named Mohamed Mabruk was shot in front of the El-Serag Mall in Nasr City, Eastern Cairo, by several bullets from a white car driven by three militants, when he drove to his office and died at the scene, Al-Ahram website quoted a security source as saying.

Mohamed is one of the police officers who are in charge of the investigation into the assassination of the interior minister in September, and he was once involved in arresting the terrorists in their cells in Nasr City, the source added.

The interior minister ordered to start investigation into the incident and capture the suspects who fled the scene.

On September 5, Egyptian Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim survived an assassination attempt when a bomb exploded near his convoy in the capital Cairo, but 19 other people were injured.
