New Delhi, Feb 8, (APD) - K.K. Shailaja, the health minister of Kerala, recently said that she was hoping that the province would be coronavirus free by early March.

In the southern province, so far three people have tested positive for the coronavirus. Moreover, about 2,800 people have been quarantined, while over 2,239 persons are still under surveillance in Kerala.

Earlier, Kerala had declared that the province was under ‘state calamity’, however on Friday, the status was withdrawn by the authorities.

Kerala took the decision to declare coronavirus infection as state calamity after the third confirmed case was detected.

The health minister also informed that a Rapid Response Control, or RRC, the room has been set up in Thiruvananthapuram.

18 expert groups had also been formed to oversee departments like home quarantine, contact tracing, isolation, logistics, and training.

In an interview with media, Shailaja explained that cases were being detected early in Kerala.

About coronavirus, she said, “We were braced for this since the earliest global media reports. On 17 January, our health secretary and I sat together and discussed what to do because we knew a lot of Malayalee medical students were in Wuhan.”

“After our meeting, my health secretary immediately held a video conference with officials and asked everyone to be vigilant. After Nipah, we have been conducting mock drills in major hospitals and giving additional training to medicos every few months,” she added.
