The African Union said it has been working with countries that are popular migrant destinations to make sure these new arrivals are treated well.

The group said it wanted to avoid the unnecessary suffering of African migrants at the hands of aid workers or security forces in different countries.

Amira Elfadil Mohammed, the African Union Commissioner for Social Affairs, said plans by European nations to close off their borders would not solve the migrant crisis.

She said making immigration more difficult was against the right to movement, and the AU needed to address issues that forced migrants to leave.
