A meeting on Syria crisis between the UN mediator and senior officials from Russia and the United States will take place on Friday, a UN official said Monday.

The meeting of UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi, Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Gennady Gatilov and United States Under Secretary of States for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman will come as the peace talks on Syria are being held in Geneva.

Corinne Momal-Vanian, spokeswoman with the United Nations Office at Geneva, made the announcement Monday evening here.

After the first round of Geneva II negotiations between Syria's warring sides mediated by Brahimi adjourned some ten days ago without achieving concrete results, a second round of talks resumed here Monday morning but saw little rift healed so far.

The new round of talks was expected to last a whole week.

The first day began with separate closed-door meetings between Brahimi with Syria's opposition delegations and then with the Syrian government, in an effort to set an agenda for the second round of talks.

During Monday's talks, the two sides did not budge from their main positions, with the government side insisting that stopping violence and terrorism is the top priority, while the opposition focusing on the establishment of a transitional governing body.
