KATHMANDU, April 11(APD)-- Nepal's Prime Minister K P Oli has expressed gratitude towards the Chinese government for the installation of a solar power system, illuminating Singha Durbar, Nepal's administrative headquarters, by over one-megawatt solar power. Jointly inaugurated by PM Oli and Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Yu Hong today, the Solar Photovoltaic Project was completed under China's Aid.

On the occasion, PM Oli appreciated China's support in the construction of the solar photovoltaic project in a short span of time. He hoped that the project would work as a model project. The Prime Minister also said that China's Belt and Road Initiative has opened up new avenues for cooperation between Nepal and China in multiple sectors including energy. He added that solar technology would help in end dependency on traditional electricity sources for the energy needs.

The installation of solar panels started in November 2016 in about 21 buildings in Singha Durbar, including Prime Minister's Office, Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Energy, among others. The project includes rooftop photovoltaic power on buildings and car parking slots.

Officials said that the 37 million Yuan-project was handled by China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd.

Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Yu Hong said that the project would be a model project for Nepal to expand energy supply channels, strengthen electricity supply security and realize green development.
