At least 14 people, including 10 children and four women, were killed when a boat carrying Rohingya refugees capsized off the coast of Bangladesh on Thursday, local police said.

A total of 130 Rohingya fleeing Myanmar were on board when the boat capsized, according to the International Organization for Migration.

The organization has reported a different death toll, saying that 13 bodies have been recovered so far.

"The boat hit something underground as it came close to the beach. Then it overturned," reported AFP, citing witnesses.

The accident also left an unknown number of people missing, a police official added.

According to the UN, the number of Rohingya refugees who have fled to Bangladesh since violence broke out in Myanmar's Rakhine State on August 25 has exceeded half a million.
