Pyongyang has confirmed it test fired a new type of ground-to-sea cruise missile on Thursday with top leader Kim Jong Un supervising the launch, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The new type of anti-ship cruise missiles is a "powerful attack means capable of striking any enemy group of battleships," KCNA noted.

Thursday's missile launch is the fourth such test-firing in just one month. In recent months, Pyongyang has accelerated the pace of its military activities related to nuclear and ballistic missiles in defiance of UN resolutions, warning of possible military action from the US and condemnation from the international community.

A number of cruise missiles were launched from caterpillar self-propelled launching pad vehicles capable of staging strikes "at will," the news agency noted.

"The launched cruise rockets accurately detected and hit the floating targets on the East Sea of Korea (Sea of Japan) after making circular flights," said the report.

Media reports on Thursday said the test launch was made from the DPRK's eastern coastal city of Wonsan, a major naval base near the military demarcation line.

The missile launch came less than a week after the United Nations Security imposed travel bans and asset freezes on 14 DPRK individuals and four entities in response to its repeated ballistic missile launches.
