Yesterday afternoon’s 6.9 magnitude earthquake in the vicinity of Matanao, Davao del Sur triggered some 457 aftershocks as of 5:00 A.M. today as two persons died while 31 others were injured.

Other reports about casualties and injuries are still being validated by the NDRRMC and their local counterparts.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported four public buildings collapsed with 15 others partially damaged. Among the totally damaged structures were the Municipal Hall and a store both in Magsaysay town, Davao del Sur, Malandang Public Market in Cotabato Province, an Evangelical church in Sarangani province and a store in Padada town in Davao del Sur.

Classes in five cities and four towns have been suspended as government officials do the necessary assessment of the structure’s stability.

Power has been restored in earthquake-stricken areas in southern Philippines.
