This week Dr Zahid Chauhan OBE buried his colleague and friend Dr Saad Al-Dubbaisi, a GP in Bury.

The community came out to say goodbye to a man who'd taken care of them but like many in the UK, had died with Covid-19. Sadly, Dr Chauhan has other colleagues who are on ventilators fighting for their lives.

Many people see their General Practitioner (GP) or doctor as a member of their family. It's one reason Dr Zahid Chauhan thinks people are choosing not to visit surgeries if they feel unwell; they're worried about catching Covid-19 but they also don't want to give it to anyone else, especially a family member.

Before Covid-19 entered our lives, Dr Zahid Chauhan was a part-time GP, overseeing various GPs surgeries and causes. He's the Cabinet member for Adult Health and Social care in Oldham, north-west England.

In 2018 he started the Homeless Friendly charity, to encourage organisations to help and accommodate those without a permanent home. The situation is even more dire during the pandemic.

The virus has changed everything. Now he's on call 24 hours a day. He can see the economic toll it's taking on his patients which is affecting their physical health and mental state of mind. He's also struggled, but insists it's his social responsibility to look after patients in his care.
