At least 15 people were hit by an SUV in Melbourne, Australia Thursday afternoon, and the driver has been arrested by local police.

The incident happened at around 4:41 p.m. local time (0541 GMT), when a car "collided with a number of pedestrians" on Flinders Street, a busy junction in the center of the city, said Victoria Police.

The car was estimated to be travelling 60 kph to 100 kph when it drove through a throng of 40 to 60 people, local media reported citing a witness at the scene.

The exact number of injured pedestrians has not been confirmed yet, but it is reported that some of them have been sent to the hospital.

People have been asked to avoid the area by the police.

The driver's motive has not been confirmed, but the police have not said that this accident was terror-related.
