An Israeli soldier was shot dead on Sunday evening by a Palestinian sniper in the West Bank city of Hebron, the spokesperson for the Israeli army confirmed to Xinhua.

The soldier was hit by a bullet to his neck and died shortly after, the spokesperson said.

The shooting took place near Hebron's Cave of Patriarchs, a holy prayer site for both Muslim and Jewish religions.

On Saturday, the body of Tomer Hazan, an Israeli soldier, was found near the city of Qalqiliya in the northern West Bank. Hazan was abducted and killed on Friday by Nedal Amar who planned to trade his body for his brother who serves a 30-year sentence for his involvement in attacks against Israeli citizens.

The two incidents cast a shadow on the peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians resumed in July after a three-year halt.

A few hours after the shooting attack, senior cabinet ministers called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to release more Palestinian prisoners as part of the negotiations.
