APD | Samsung dominates South Korean smartphone market

South Korea’s Samsung Electronics overwhelmed local competitor LG Electronics and Apple of the United States in the domestic smartphone market in the third quarter of this year, according to data released by market research company Counterpoint Research.

In the July-September period, Samsung's smartphones accounted for 71 percent of local market share, up 3 percentage points quarter-on-quarter and 4 percentage points year-on-year.

LG Electronics came in second with a market share of 17 percent, followed by Apple with 11 percent.

Samsung took seven spots in the list of the top 10 best-selling smartphones in South Korea, while Apple had two and LG only one.

Samsung is planning to launch Galaxy Fold in many more countries, including Brazil, New Zealand and Chile.

The Galaxy Fold is currently available in 29 countries, including South Korea, the US, Japan and France. The total shipments of the latest foldable phone may hit over 500,000 by early 2020.
