Pakistani PM approves anti-terror rapid response force

Pakistani Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, on Tuesday approved establishment of rapid response forces at the federal and provincial levels to quickly respond to any terror incident.

The new force has been established in view of the well- coordinated and organized attacks by the militants in sensitive areas including the capital Islamabad.

The Prime Minister, who presided over a high level meeting on security in Islamabad, issued instructions to recruit quality and trained manpower for the new force, the PM media office said.

The Director General Military Operations and a Deputy Director General (ISI) and Interior Minister briefed the meeting on different aspects of Internal Security Issues.

In view of threats to the prisons, the Prime Minister directed fast track establishment of high security prisons in all provinces.

The Taliban militants have broken two prisons in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over the past two years and freed hundreds of inmates, including danger militants. As many high profile militants are languishing in jails, the authorities have also tightened security for all prisons.

The Prime Minister directed to immediately establish National Intelligence Directorate to pool National and Provincial intelligence resources. He also asked the four provinces to utilize the options available in a new law that has made electronic evidence admissible, allowed for video link trial with provision for transfer of trials/prisoners to other provinces and preventive detention of enemy aliens.

The capacities of Federal and Provincial Law Enforcement Agencies were also reviewed in the meeting and the Prime Minister desired that Provinces should work more to ensure admissible evidence and efficient prosecution in heinous offenses within time limits.

Nawaz Sharif handed over Bomb Disposal Response Vehicles (BDRV) to the Provinces which are equipped with latest technology to defuse the bombs and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

The official statement did not mention the Taliban talks, however, official sources and section of the media reported that the issue was also discussed as the government and the Taliban are set to begin direct talks.

The media said the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction at the "progress" in the ongoing talks with the Taliban and said his government is committed to pursue the peace process.

The meeting was attended by all Chief Ministers, key ministers, Army Chief, General Rahil Sharif, chief of the intelligence agency, ISI, Lt Gen Zahirul Islam, Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen Ashfaq Ahmad Nadeem, Director General Military Operations, Major General Amir Riaz, provincial police chiefs and other top government officials.
