More than 20 petitioners urge the government to quickly develop the outlying Lantau Islandand fully utilize the lands in Tung Chung district, in a bid to enhance competitiveness of the region.

The petitioners from political party Democratic Alliance for Betterment of Hong Kong and the New Territories Association for Societies said the government proposed development plan for Tung Chung, but concrete measures are yet to be launched. Fro the time being, structural population imbalance and insufficiency of community facilities are the chief trouble of the district. They urge the government to implement the development, and take advantage of the geographic advantages of the Hong Kong Inernational Airport, to improve the transportation system.

In fact, the authorities have started the Tung Chung New Town Development Extension Study, and various large-scale infrastructure projects on North Lantau, such as the Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities (HKBCF) of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB), Hong Kong Link Road and Tuen Mun-Chap Lap Kok Link, etc., have commenced one after another.

Meanwhile, Some civil organisations have pointed out that on the premise of striking a balance between conservation and development, the authorities should improve the internal and external transport links of Lantau Island, make good use of port facilities there to develop "bridgehead economy", develop Tung Chung into a new town with local characteristics which is suitable for living, doing business, working, sightseeing and schooling, and promote the economic development of Hong Kong by capitalising on the synergy generated by the North Lantau development.
