Korean Peninsula Tension

China has called for calm on the Korean Peninsula, after the Democratic People's Republic of Korea conducted a fresh nuclear test last week.

Beijing is asking all parties involved to avoid any action that may escalate tensions - and for six-party talks to resume.

A recent report by Reuters news agency said the DPRK told China its future plans for nuclear tests and rocket launches... But the allegation was dismissed by China's Foreign Ministry:

SOUNDBITE (CHINESE) HONG LEI, Foreign Ministry Spokesman:

"We don't know where the Reuters report came from... The situation on the peninsula currently is sensitive and complicated. We call on relevant parties to stay calm".

The DPRK conducted its third nuclear test on February 12th, despite opposition from the international community, including China.

The Chinese spokesman said efforts should remain focused on realizing denuclearization and non-proliferation in the region, by negotiation...

Including six-party talks between the DPRK, South Korea, China, Japan, Russia and the United States.
