CPPCC's new leader vows democracy

The Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference concluded on Tuesday morning in Beijing.

Yu Zhengsheng, the newly-elected leader of the nation's top political advisory body, has vowed to promote consultative democracy.

At the closing meeting of the first session of the 12th CPPCC National Committee, Yu told more than 2,000 political advisors that consultative democracy is the heart of a socialist democracy.

The 68-year-old former Shanghai Party Chief was elected chairman of CPPCC National Committee on Monday.

And is a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.

He said the CPPCC's consultative democracy integrates oversight, participation and cooperation...

And urged the CPPCC to be more representative and inclusive.

Yu also vowed to broaden consultative democracy... By expanding the channels for citizens to participate in political affairs.

But the new leader said China won't copy Western political systems under any circumstances.

The first session of the 12th CPPCC National Committee lasted from March 3rd to 12th.

The CPPCC is a main body for political consultation, and advises the ruling Communist Party of China, in line with the people's interests.

Its members represent various groups of society, including party and non party members, organizations, ethnic minorities...

But the political body's new head said for China's policies to benefit the majority of its people, it must become more representative, in future.
