New Chinese ambassador presents credentials to Maltese president

Yu Dunhai, the newly appointed Chinese ambassador to Malta, presented his credentials to President of Malta George Vella on Thursday.

Vella welcomed the new ambassador and expressed his thanks to China's support for Malta in the battle against the coronavirus pandemic. He underlined Malta's commitment to the long-standing bilateral relations, which have yielded mutually-beneficial results in political, economic and cultural fields.

Ambassador Yu Dunhai first conveyed the cordial greetings and best wishes of Chinese President Xi Jinping to the Maltese president, government and people. The envoy, who is a former deputy director of the Foreign Ministry Information Department of China, spoke highly of China-Malta relations.

He pointed out that China and Malta have enjoyed sound and fast growth of friendly relations. In 2018, the two governments signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), drawing a blueprint for expanding bilateral cooperation in various fields.

He added that the two countries have closely cooperated with and supported each other during the coronavirus pandemic. January next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malta. Ambassador Yu said he is willing to take this opportunity to work with Malta to continue to firmly support each other in international and regional affairs.
