The first batch of emergency medical and rescue teams from China arrived in Manila on Wednesday night for a relief mission in central Philippines.

The country was devastated by a super typhoon about two weeks ago, which left over 4 thousand people dead and displaced millions more.

The Chinese emergency rescue team is made up of 18 members sent by the Red Cross Society of China.

They were to leave for Tacloban, one of the hardest-hit areas, and stay there for 15 days.

Meanwhile, the Peace Ark Hospital Ship from China's naval force is to set sail on Thursday to provide medical aid in the Philippines. The hospital ship is equipped with advanced medical systems.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry says it hopes the mission will help ease the lack of medical services in the disaster areas in the Philippines, and act as a token of the Chinese people's friendship with the Filipinos.

Earlier this week, China shipped 164 million U.S. dollars worth of relief goods, including 10,000 blankets and 2,600 tents, to a disaster relief distribution center, and turned them over to the Philippines.

A charted airplane will bring 2,000 more tents, medicine and medical devices to the disaster-hit areas on Saturday.

China increased its assistance to the Philippines as casualties and damages triggered by typhoon "Haiyan" have continued to grow.

Philippine government figures show death toll from the typhoon has soared to 4,011. 10 million people have been affected and the cost of damage to properties climbed to 275 million U.S. dollars.
